Tony Stewart Injured In Iowa ~
This morning I awoke and logged on as usual. I always start by checking my social media accounts and reviewing the morning news from CNN, BBC and my local NBC station.
But today the first thing I see is news about someone who is very important to me – Tony Stewart Suffers Injuries In Iowa. My heart sunk to my stomach and I felt as if I had received bad news about a close family member that I care about deeply!
Now let me explain that when you are in a deep pit of stress, anxiety and despair for an extended period as we are there are few things, if any things, that bring solace or distraction.
For me the only thing that helps me relax or takes my mind off our problems is racing. Not just any racing, but racing that involves or is related to my favorite driver Tony Stewart. I love that man.
Tony, also known as Smoke, has achieved “12 series championships since he first wheeled a go-kart in 1978 at a Westport, Indiana, racetrack” says his bio at TSR. His most notable championships are his 3-Sprint Cup titles from Nascar.
When he’s not racing or doing the business of his Nascar team, Tony is doing what he loves most, racing on dirt in his #14 Winged Sprint Car. Which is what he was doing on Monday night, August 5th.
In his off time, Tony is driving his Winged Sprint car in a World of Outlaws Dirt races. He “finished fourth in the 3rd ASCS Front Row Challenge heat race at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa” tweeted (11:42 PM – 5 Aug 13) his @TonyStewart_Rcg twitter account reported.
A few moments later came the tweet (11:45 PM – 5 Aug 13) “Tony Stewart will start third in tonight’s ASCS Front Row Challenge feature at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. @oskychallenges”. With no further updates after that. So I went to bed thinking he was having fun and did well in last night’s race.
Seeing this morning’s headline my heart began to race and I was hoping “injury” was going to be something mild. I rushed to find news and learned Tony finished 5th in the A-Main event. Then I discovered: “The crash happened during the final Feature race. Stewart was leading in the 30-lap feature in a 360 winged sprint car with five laps to go when a lapped car spun in turn 4 and caused Stewart and two others to crash.” reports KCCI News.
Finally later in the afternoon, Bob Pockrass of SportingNews posted a Tony Stewart Inury Update that includes video of the incident from Nascar.com.
The Des Moines Register reports “with five laps remaining when Josh Higday’s car spun on Turn 4 and collected the top three cars – Stewart, Tasker Phillips and Tony Shilling.” Adding “Brian Brown raced to victory, holding off Kyle Larson after the restart.”
Tony was conscious and talking after the incident. He was conscious and talking as he was loaded into the track ambulance and then airlifted to the hospital.
He broke his right tibia and fibula and had surgery at a Des Moines hospital. Word came late this afternoon that he will require a second surgery. He remains in the hospital under observation.
SHR announced the Nascar test they were to do at Atlanta Motor Speedway this afternoon has been cancelled. Tony will not be racing in this weekends Watkins Glen road race. Stewart-Haas Racing announced on Twitter (1:36 PM – 6 Aug 13) that Max Papis will be the replacement driver for his #14 SHR Nascar entry this weekend.
By not competing in this weekend’s race, Tony breaks his 521 consecutive starts, reported Dustin Long from the Motor Racing Network (MRN) reported on Twitter (9:30 AM – 6 Aug 13). It was 3rd longest active mark.
