Coffee’s natural ability to help with digestion has made it a mainstay in dinning rooms and restaurants for an after dinner drink. But as with most drinks, people wanted a little something more in their after dinner drinks to relax from a long day of work in or outside the house.
Introduction of..the spiked after dinner coffee drink. Coffee has been mixed with every variety of alcohol made. Yes, including wine. But let’s not go there, because that’s simply weird.
I’m a crème de mint and crème de cacao kind of person. Tell me you have a drink that includes either of those and I’m up for a nice taste of your concoction. And that’s how I discovered Keoke Coffee.
A close friend got married and took off to Hawaii for their honeymoon. When she came back she brought me a recipe and we couldn’t wait to give it a try. And it is fabulous! Especially if you really want to sleep solidly later that night.
Now as it turns out, Keoke Coffee originated in California by one of the owners of Bully’s Steakhouse. His name was George and Keoke is Hawaiian for George.
Something my Mom always suggests for after dinner drinks, warm up the mugs in the oven first. Don’t make them so hot you can’t touch them. But if you take the chill off the cups, the drink will remain warm much longer after you serving. In this case the mug should be at a minimum of 10oz.
- ¾ ounce Kahlua
- ¼ ounce crème de cacao
- ¾ ounce brandy
- 1 cup freshly brewed coffee
- Whipped cream
Additionally, if you want to make a spiked coffee the last thing you want to do is use liqueurs that have been refrigerated. But you don’t want to heat up the liqueurs and cook off the alcohol that’s in it. If you know you’re going to be making a spiked after dinner drink, set out the bottles so they reach room temperature by the time you’re ready to mix the drinks.
Remember that serving this as an after dinner coffee means you brew a dark roast, that’s light on the caffeine.
- Combine Kahlua, creme de cacao, and brandy in a large mug or heat-proof glass.
- Add one cup of hot fresh brewed coffee and stir.
- Top with whipped cream.
- Garnish with a cherry.
There aren’t many alternatives with this drink. It is what it is. But if you don’t like cherries on top of your whip cream, garnish with chocolate shavings or very small chocolate chip morsels.
